My project at it's core was about how we can construct in a more harmonious way through looking at how we build today and asking what would happen if we flipped alot of those preconceived notions upside down. Building slowly and over time with community in mind was how we would achieve the goal of making it possible.
Below is a link to the full 200 page book curated over a year of work. What you will see on this page is an elevator pitch giving the broad ideas and some of the highlight moments.
This is the Trans Canada Trail. I've divided it into four regions based on climate and geographic conditions.
PRAIRIES
GREAT LAKES REGION
MARITIMES
NORTHERN TERRITORIES
Light architecture is a mentality that promotes,
Minimal disruption through,
How architecture touches the ground
Does it overstimulate the ecosystem
Achieved through,
Building smaller / slower
With many hands
Long standing construction practices have had an impact. Sudden construction activity disrupts the natural flow of a space.
In order to build with many hands we require a tool that can be used to communicate how to build to many people over a long period of time. Something between an architectural narrative and hard prescriptive construction documentation.
This is a project from the artist Sol Lewitt. He would leave a set of instructions for another to come along and make the artwork itself. The result allows for different interpretations while still adhering to a common structure.
For every terrain typology we can write a new ruleset to accommodate for its specific needs
Using the ruleset we can build slowly and over time with many hands.
Like the trail marker a few stones along a path in a remote location a cabin will be build and maintained by the user slowly and over a long period of time.
Hiker's will identify on the ground
Ruleset will be produced
A sign with the ruleset will be placed onsite
Each location identified along the Trans Canada Trail will have its own ruleset to be built by slowly by passerby's over many years and many people. These are some examples that I developed along with their ruleset.
