Located in the heart of Boston Massachusetts on a site fronting the high traffic Boylston street. The majority of the site itself is a below grade highway and train rail with preexisting structural walls that our building would have to sit on.
We began forming the massing by respecting the existing structural walls coming from the below grade highway and rail.
Because this building was meant to showcase the talent of the students I raised the entire building on a "stage". This would also help with below grade vibrations.
Finally the shape of the main building was formed by attempting to cut the building back to avoid casting a huge shadow along the entire street.
Finished construction floor plans.
As part of the LEED v4 checklist it was important to have sun screening. I used corten steel which is highly robust and locally manufactured and used a visual music computer language called midi to imprint the song of a well known Berkley school of music alumni. The Berkley school of music being apart of the Pro-Arts consortium.
The featured space in the project was the theatre. It is meant to be an impromptu space that would allow for concerts and small theatre productions.
These are construction details showing how we would mitigate vibration and noise coming from the highway below.
The project had to be LEED certified and so we worked with the LEED v4 checklist throughout the design. We achieved 94 points giving a rating of Platinum.
